On February 2, 2017, The Copyright Society Of The South hosted Bart Herbison, the Executive Director of Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI).

Bart provided an overview of the current situation in Washington, DC in terms of copyright reform, songwriter advocacy, and other music policy developments. He walked the group though the near-term outlook for the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the broader global copyright marketplace.

In the legislative branch, one of the most influential people for the music industry is Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee is the committee in the House from which copyright reform legislation would originate. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) is the Ranking Member on the committee. Both men are strong allies to the copyright community. In the executive branch, there are promising signs for copyright supporters, and Herbison said that the new pick to lead the Department of Justice “looks good.”
