Everything Copyright Owners Need To Know About Spotify: Mechanical and Performance with James Duffett-Smith

| May 7, 2015 | 0 Comments

On May 7th, 2015 the Copyright Society of the South welcomed James Duffett-Smith, the Global Head of Publisher Relations at Spotify. There are many mixed emotions with regards to Spotify, and James is responsible for  relationships between publishers, societies and songwriters around the world. Many are not happy with the amount of revenue earn through digital streaming, not to mention free ad-supported  streaming. However, James explained that every year more and more users switch to Premium service (monthly paid subscriptions).  Spotify is trying to educate the consumer by allowing free ad-based streaming, so that they will eventually pay for premium subscriptions.

In 2014 Spotify had 15 million + premium users and 45 million + free ad-based users.  One (1) Billion was paid out. Thats a positive increase from 2013 where 500 million was paid out. As Sopify continues to grow, hopefully the music creators wallets will too!
